I know this is just an example on how to do things but I think in general messing too much with customization with elements such as a tabbar may provide a poor user experience.

One of the advantages of iOS against android for example is the consistency of the look and feel over many apps. Introducing a complete different look and behavior to an element so familiar for users such as a tabbar may confuse the user, which is always an undesired.

@Ares: I agree, just because you *can* do something doesn't mean you *should* do something. But in the end, these new APIs are extremely useful to make your app look similar to the standard UI, but different enough to give "flair" and look more professional IMHO.

As usual, Ray and his team have gone above and beyond. Congratulations and thank you!

I'm very much looking forward to replacing my drawRect functions will some nice snappy code.

This is my first major release as a developer and I'm wondering how the new API works for older version. How do you manage an app, knowing that not everyone will be running iOS5? I assume you'll have to check the version and then depending on that customise the controls using different methods?

Fabulous tutorial and I can't wait to implement it on my app. No more tedious attempting to get the right background color every time or coding it!

Great post. Needed a kick start for an old project that wasn't showing the customized toolbar in iOS 5. However, did notice, unlike the UIKit objects shown in the tutorial here, UIToolbar doesn't have an 'appearance' property. You call 'setBackgroundImage:forToolbarPosition:barMetrics:' directly on the UIToolbar object. Why it's different, I don't know.
