A while back, you may recall that I wrote a tutorial called How To Make A Space Shooter iPhone Game.
I had a lot of fun with that tutorial, so as I was writing it I spent some time adding some extra polish and neat features to the game.
After I wrote the tutorial, I asked you guys if you’d like me to turn the game into a “Space Game Starter Kit” for sale on this site, containing:
- the full source code of the game
- and a tutorial to show how to make it from scratch!
The votes are in – and by an overwhelming majority, you guys said you wanted it!
That’s exactly what I’ve been working on for the past several weeks, so here’s a status update:
Show Me The Video!
I know what most of you are thinking right about now… “shut up and show me the video!” I aim to please :]
As you can see, I’ve improved the game quite a bit since last time. It now has the following new features:
- Multiple levels, defined via a simple text file!
- Main menu, text separating levels
- Swarms of aliens moving in bezier paths
- A health bar with resizing textures
- And of course, a bad-ass boss fight!
I’ve also written the tutorial to go along with the code to show you how to make it from scratch.
And actually not one tutorial – but four epic-length tutorials – 150 pages in total!
As you can probably guess, this took a ton of work :]
I’ve decided to make the final price of the Space Game Starter Kit $77. I think you’ll find this well worth the money – between the source code and tutorials, it should save you many hours of development on your own game.
Plus, I think you’ll have a lot of fun going through the tutorials, will learn a ton, and will have a cool game at the end that you can use as a starting point of your own – or show off to your friends and family!
So When’s It Coming Out?
Update: The Space Game Starter Kit is now available on the new raywenderlich.com store!
Right now I’ve completely finished the source code and writing the four epic-length tutorials.
I still have a bit of work to do though. I’m getting the tutorials professionally formatted into a PDF so you can read it on your Macs, iPads, or wherever else you’d like easily. I’m also in the process of setting up the back-end on this site so you can purchase the starter kit.
Finally, I’m going to run a beta test on the starter kit. If you’re interested in helping beta test in exchange for a free copy, please volunteer in the forum thread below.
Note I can only take a few people and this is first-come, first-serve.
w00t – we’re getting close – probably a few weeks out. I’ll post an update here when it’s available!
Get ready for some alien blasting fun – our space ship needs a true Xcode hero to save him from certain destruction! :]
